CustomEd
Customized. Flexible. Designed for Your School.
NDCDE CustomEd helps schools address educational needs that may not fit within our standard course offerings. Schools can use one request form to explore teacher coverage, instructional support, customized courses or services, and approved short-term student placements.
For schools only: The CustomEd Request Form must be submitted by an authorized school, district, academy, facility, or program representative. It is not intended for parents, guardians, students, or individual families.

How CustomEd Can Help
Teacher of Record Services
Schools may request a licensed teacher for a course or subject when local instructional coverage is unavailable or limited.
The form gathers information about the subject, grade level, number of students and sections, requested start date, current coverage plan, schedule, technology, and staff available to support students on site.
Residential and Nontraditional Instructional Support
NDCDE can work with residential facilities, alternative schools, and other nontraditional educational programs to explore curriculum and instructional solutions designed around their students and setting.
Schools and programs can describe their instructional schedule, grade levels, classroom organization, available technology, staffing, current courses, student-support needs, and primary instructional challenges.
New Course or Customized Service
Schools may request a course, program, or educational service that is not currently available through NDCDE.
The form asks schools to describe the requested service, why existing NDCDE offerings do not meet the need, the intended student group, estimated enrollment, preferred start date, instructional setting, available on-site support, and any technology or scheduling constraints.
Short-Term Student Placement: Continuity Core
- Illness or injury recovery
- Quarantine
- Family relocation or custody transitions
- Another short-term disruption to regular school attendance
Continuity Core provides a structured, self-paced path in English, mathematics, science, and social studies. Courses are delivered by licensed North Dakota teachers in coordination with the student’s school.
Placements must be expected to last at least three weeks but less than three months. Students who need a full 20-week course should be registered for NDCDE’s regular standalone courses.
Continuity Core is available only through a school request. Parents, guardians, students, and families may not request or purchase the service directly.
What You Will Need
The CustomEd form adjusts its questions based on the service selected. Schools should be prepared to provide:
- School, facility, or program name and organization type
- Primary contact information
- Grade levels served
- A description of the requested service or educational need
- Estimated number of students
- Desired start date and anticipated duration
- Current instructional schedule and staffing
- Available on-site student support
- Student technology and internet-access information
- Known instructional, scheduling, or technology constraints
For a short-term placement request, the school will also provide the student’s name and grade level, the reason placement is needed, previous NDCDE experience, and the anticipated length of placement.
What Happens After You Submit the Form?
- Administrative review: A member of NDCDE’s administrative team reviews the request to determine eligibility, fit, and the appropriate next steps.
- School follow-up: The reviewing administrator contacts the school directly. Additional information may be requested before a determination can be made.
- Service planning: If NDCDE can meet the need, the administrator works with the school to clarify the service, timeline, responsibilities, availability, and applicable costs.
- Enrollment or implementation instructions: The school receives instructions for moving forward. For an approved Continuity Core placement, the reviewing administrator emails the school the private checkout link and enrollment instructions.
Submitting the form does not automatically approve a service or enroll a student. Schools should wait for follow-up from an NDCDE administrator before taking additional action.
