Competency-Based Education at NDCDE
At NDCDE, learning is focused on what learners know and can do rather than simply completing assignments or accumulating points. Our competency-based approach makes progress toward North Dakota standards easier to see and understand.
What does CBE mean for learners?
CBE helps learners, families, teachers, learning coaches, and schools understand progress by connecting learning to specific standards and skills.
Clear learning
Courses are aligned to North Dakota standards so learners can see the knowledge and skills they are working toward.
Meaningful feedback
Feedback helps learners understand what they have mastered and where additional learning or practice may be needed.
Evidence of learning
Assessments provide evidence of what a learner knows and can do—not simply whether an assignment was completed.
Opportunities to keep learning
If proficiency has not been demonstrated yet, learners may revisit learning, use feedback, and demonstrate understanding again.
Flexible pacing—with an end date
NDCDE's asynchronous environment allows flexibility within the course enrollment period. Learners are still expected to make consistent progress and finish by the established end date. Learners participating in athletics, activities, or programs with eligibility requirements must also follow their local school's pacing and academic-progress expectations.
